Muzos FM
For most music lovers there are one or two people who first introduced them to all the albums and genres that would become so important to them.
Someone who was so passionate about music they wanted to share it with anyone who would listen.
For SoundCheck founder Chris Hedges that was his older brother, lending him CDs of Gorillaz and Linkin Park as a kid; then his house mate at university, earnestly introducing him to hip-hop, techno and jazz.
The value of music is in these moments.
Music matters most to us when it connects us with other people. When we share it, not when we try to hoard it for ourselves.
With streaming giving us endless access to any music we can imagine, there's never been a better time to listen to music. But what if we're also losing that connection at the same time? Music is increasingly fed to us via algorithms and TikTok-like feeds, and it's making us all passive listeners, pushing music into the background.
A new place to discover music. Shared by real people, not bots.
Muzos FM offers music lovers a new place to get away from the endless stream, to pause and think about what they've listened to, and see what other people are experiencing as well. Easy to use, and Ad free for anyone with an account, a platform that makes it easy to find great albums, and to organise your favourite records into collections so you can always refer back to them.
And what about the people who are actually making the music?
We all know artists aren’t making money from making records anymore. Muzos FM is on a mission to change that.
So what are we doing differently?
Most streaming services don't actually pay per stream, but pay a percentage of how much your music was listened to compared to everything else. If an artist gets 10% of the streams that month, they get 10% of all the royalties. That's great when you get your single on the biggest playlist on the platform, but if you're releasing your new experimental ambient disco album, most of your fans' subscription fee is probably being reallocated to artists they're not even listening to.
Muzos FM is taking a different approach, designed to complement this system rather than replace it.
For every premium subscriber, we take the majority of their subscription fee (6€ for premium subscribers, 2.50€ for general subscribers) and we use it pay one artist whose album they rated most highly each month.
For Example, a four piece indie folk band self-release their new 10 track album and it gets streamed 1,000 times by their fans. With streaming rates of estimated $0.004 per stream they could expect to make about 40€ from the streaming royalties. That covers a couple of drinks and some pizza to celebrate.
But when that album reaches 1,000 premium subscribers on Muzos FM who give it their best rating that month, the return would be 6,000€. That's enough to pay for the up front costs of touring, maybe even make up the costs of recording the album itself.
This way, we believe we can start building a system that works for all artists, regardless of their size.
Muzos FM is proudly basic in its design.
We just want to share great music and help artists earn a living.
There is no AI deciding what you do and don't see. Only real music recommended by real fans.
